The Weekly Truth: Digital Distribution Needs Some Changes

Prof. Truth touches on a touchy subject this week that seems to be taking over the gamingĀ  industry and that is Digital Distribution. Truth discusses some of the pros and cons of the subject and breaks down what needs to be changed in order to truly be user-friendly for all. This, of course, involves the digital downloading rules on both consoles and we’d love to hear what you think about it in the comment section below.

I don’t much like that EA wants most retail down to digital as it would hamper my ability to just try games before a purchase.

digital distobution, yea its great for addons, mini games, psp games
but downloading 50gb just to play metal gear solid 4 is a waste of hard disc space, not to mention that more data you hawe on youre hdd the slower it gets, and how youre limited to share it, and theres this special thing about hawing a fisical copy of a game
i like to see my game collection on the shelf than in a folder

Digital Distribution would only be second. It won’t really eat the industry as a whole since many people wants an actual item in their hands.

I agree with K-grim. Digital distribution is great for psn games and other “smaller” size games (usually no more than a gig or two). I have a lot of psn games myself, but I still prefer having a hard copy. I agree that digital distribution still needs some changes before it will (if ever) become the norm.

Digital distribution for large games isn’t for this generation, for the simple reason: Not many gamers can download the size of it. They will need to use Live streaming like OnLive.

    @ Jimmy.

The problem is, games keep getting bigger and bigger every gen too. So even though DL speeds may get better, they may be countered by even more gigs of data per game.

I am a physical media whore, i love the fact that, if i buy a game and dont care for it, or beat it really fast (coughMW2cough) i can resell it.

I would like to see the PS3 being able to back up game saves onto PSN ID’s. That way I could log into my PSN at a friends house and be able to play my own save data.

Digital distribution is good for bringing back old games, or small downloadable games, but really, I’d rather own a physical copy of the game for a few reasons.

    1) If you are willing to wait, most physical games fall 50-75% in price within the first 2 years. This is not true with most of the digital games on PSN.

    2) You can’t resell the game if it sucks or has no real replay value. ( Army of Two was fun, but I sold my copy for $6 because I didn’t feel it had the replay value. )

    3) It’s too big of a pain to transfer to another console at another address.

    4) We’re a long ways from being able to download and store 10 GB+ games. Let’s say I want 20 games, ok, that’s 200+ GB of HD space I need, so it’s not gonna fit on my 80 GB PS3.

well…with the way they can compress the games and since size varies from game to game it can be possible…

I also like the ease of having multiple games on the HDD and being able to play those without having to get out of bed, opening up a game case and swapping out another game. However, as you said, as far as sharing it is sort of limited. I found that game save data doesn’t always work on other PS3’s. I got Prototype on launch but spent the weekend at a friend’s house when I got it. I put in about a good four hours into the game on his PS3 but I didn’t worry because not only did I make my profile on his system, but I backed the game save onto a thumb drive. No sooner do I get home, pop the game in, pop the thumb drive in, copy the data over and load the game, do I get a msg stating the save is from a different system and wouldn’t work. So I had to start all the way over from scratch. Needless to say, I am always reluctant to play a new game of mine on his PS3.

Good shit man. Your vids here are always top notch.

Digital distribution is a very good thing. I just take my password and change it and take off my VISA number and allow my friends to get the games off of me. Of course I only do this with people I absolutely trust. :D I hope EA finally does this, I can finally play madden again and prices can be lower aswell, like they did with the PSP. Hard disks of games cost more than the download.

I like Digital Media and Games. However, the whole 5 downloads per purchase is lame. If we buy a game that comes on a disc, we have rights to that forever. Yet, if we purchase games via PSN we’re only allowed a certain amount of downloads before we’re cut off and have to pay again. To combat this, Sony has provided the slim versions of the ps3 with bigger HDs in hopes that people will keep their PSN purchases longer. I still say that in the long run, people who purchase any game/movie from PSN should have rights to that media forever and not have to worry about a download count.
