Pete Hines of Bethesda Software recently discussed the upcoming Fallout title with USA Today. Featured in this editorial were slight tidbits of information detailing the story of the game and exactly how Vegas will appear at first glance. Hines was also sure to confirm that players won’t have had to have played previous titles in the Fallout franchise in order to enjoy this new title.
The things that excited me most about this game is that Vegas is still going to be Vegas. Maybe there will be mini-games featuring some sort of gambling? That could get addicting.
“Unlike the previous Fallouts, where you start in a vault and you are a vault dweller, this one starts with a curveball,” says Pete Hines of Bethesda Softworks.
It is then revealed that “a brand new, fresh experience that has a familiar feel of Fallout, but otherwise it’s an entirely new game and a new look, with Joshua trees and tumbleweeds and blue skies,” Hines says. “Vegas is up and running. It is not a ghost town. It still exists and thrives. There are casinos, and you can go down onto the Strip. It will have a very different feel from that standpoint.”
For fans of Fallout 3, you’ll be glad to know that Fallout New Vegas does take place a few years after Fallout 3, but none of the characters from that game will be moved over to the new title. Hines says, “but you will eventually hear a little bit about the events” of that game. New Vegas is” a story of its own. You don’t have to have played the previous games to have any clue what’s going on here.”
“You were a courier, and you were obviously carrying something that somebody wanted,” Hines says. “Part of the story is finding out what you had and what they took.” Says Hines, “It is a massive game world that will take you hundreds of hours to explore every nook and cranny.”
Seeing a guy like Pete Hines talk about a game like this, you know it’s going to deliver. He was one of the key pushers of Fallout 3, so judging by history, it’s good to take his word for it.

Not so much =P. I could never get in the FALLOUT series, even less when it became a FPS (I love FPSs but don’t really like FPS/RPG stuff).

Awesome! I’d love to see Vegas after the war. It’s going to be interesting how different mafias or mobs run the town and you have to get involved with casinos, hotels and such.
BTW, will the bets be in caps? lol

I want to see what odd decisions I’ll get to make. Post-nuclear war in a society somewhat stuck in the 50s is interesting as well. This might be my first Fallout game.

I am more excited then I was before. And I was pretty damn excited before. I know I’ll get giddy seeing Fallout 3 references in the game, and I hope there are Fallout 3 references a-plenty.

im waiting until i know wether or not the ps3 gets dlc at the same time or not…. if it doesnt im waiting till it ps3 dlc comes out if it does day 1 buy.

Ummm, Fallout 2 did *not* have you leaving a vault. You were a villager in the development that the original vault dweller established after being kicked out of the Vault in the first game. But whatever, at least USA Today is pimping Fallout.

Its awesome that Fallout 3: New Vegas has over a 100 hour of gameplay to it. Those will be good for those that liked the Fallout 3 game and want to play more of it.
