Overused Gaming Buzzwords
7 CommentsPosted by Joe Garcia on July 16, 2010 under PS3 Features, PlayStation 3
With every generation of games it seems that game companies throw around a bunch of important-sounding but ultimately meaningless words meant to coerce unsuspecting consumers into buying whatever they happen to be peddling at the time. Try as I might to forget, the words “virtual reality” were thrown around a lot during the early ‘90s. Unfortunately this led to Nintendo releasing the Virtual... more. -

You like video games, right? That's why you're here, after all. That's what makes E3 so special for all of us -- it's gamer Christmas. Who's going to give you the present you didn't even know you wanted? Conversely, who plays the weird aunt that gives you irregular underwear? Well, as the one and only Kevin Butler so eloquently put it during Sony's conference, in the end we're all gamers and th... more. -
E3 2010, Day Two – Sony Keynote Hits & Misses

Just like that, we're all out of E3 conferences. Sony and Nintendo both had impressive showings that really put Microsoft to shame, but it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out which conference we'll be putting our focus on. I expected to have quite a few more misses, if only because I was nervous about Move after the terrible showing Kinect had at Microsoft's show yesterday. Turns out that Son... more. -
E3 2010, Day One – Hits & Misses

Day one of the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo is in the books, and overall impressions are mixed at best. While the only action was via three separate publisher conferences (Activision's event is private and won't be seen until it sees fit), it was most certainly newsworthy. Microsoft, EA, and Ubisoft all went ahead and gathered the media for pre-show spectacles that were either awful or fanta... more. -

So you've made your way into the stunningly beautiful desert wilderness of New Austin. Perhaps you were looking to find new fortune, maybe start life anew in the West. As it turns out, the sprawling metropolis of Saint Louis this is not. These parts are home to some of the most dangerous side-winding bandits and good-for-nothings you’ll ever know. That’s no reason to lower yourself to the... more. -
What were these companies thinking?

You may or may not have heard the news that Rock Band 3 will probably feature a new keyboard peripheral. This is great news for players wanting the challenge of playing a new instrument, fans of keyboards and/or the band Journey, and those needing more toy-sized plastic instruments to clutter their living rooms. Will it just be a miniaturized keyboard? Will it be a super-rad keytar that'll make th... more. -
Putting Insomniac’s move into perspective

The big news of the day comes from Insomniac Games' new Burbank studio, where they revealed that they've entered a new distribution partnership with EA for a new multiplatform IP, meaning that this will be releasing on the Xbox 360 as well as the PS3. After 16 years of developing exclusively for Sony's PlayStation platform, this is certainly big news. They've always been an independent developer, ... more. -
Sequels that saved franchises

It's no secret that Kane & Lynch: Dead Men was a pretty crap game. There are a few people that actually enjoyed it, but I'll just go ahead and classify those people as weird. Somehow, the game sold over a million copies, causing Square Enix to green-light a sequel that no one wanted. Through some wacky voodoo witchcraft, though, Kane & Lynch 2 looks like it may actually be a decent and pla... more. -
E3 2010: Our wildly humble predictions

Well, hot diggity-damn! Is it time for E3 again already? It seems like it was just yesterday that we were fawning over the latest Uncharted 2 gameplay video, reeling from the news that Final Fantasy XIII was going multiplatform, and trying to figure out what to make of Sony's Move controller. Whether it ends up stirring unbridled joy or crushing disappointment, anticipation for this event is alway... more. -
Three awesome sanity-saving games

Life is hard. You know this, I know this. Of course, life likes to send not-so-friendly reminders of this every chance it gets. Right now, I’m juggling my regular job (which starts at 4am), school (finals next week), and writing for the site. Add this to the always-present stress of paying bills and being a Cubs fan, and suddenly I’m pretty irritable. “So what”, you ask? For starters, i... more. -
Crossover fighting games that should (but won’t) happen

Marvel vs. Capcom. Super Smash Bros. Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. OK, maybe not so much the third one. However, the existence of these games has proven time and time again that gamers love a crazy-ass crossover fighting game every now and then, and we’re certainly no different. These games bring out the dork in all of us, finally answering the pressing schoolyard question of who would win in a... more.
